Cost of living in Thailand in 2025: what really is it so inexpensive?

Thailand continues to be one of the favorite destinations of nomad digital, freelancers and expats in europe. But... how much money you really need to live here in 2025?

The answer depends on where you live (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket) and your style of life. In this guide we show you all the basic expenses: rent, food, entertainment, transportation, and insurance.

Rent in Thailand

The largest expense will be your home.

  • Bangkok (zone premium Sukhumvit/Sathorn): between 700-1.000 € for a condo with a modern pool and a fitness centre.
  • Bangkok (areas a more local): from 400-600 €.
  • Chiang Mai: between 250-500 € per month in apartments with good amenities.
  • Phuket / Samui: villas or flats from 500-800 € per month.

💡 Trick: in Thailand, you can rent month to month without the need of long contracts or pay a year in advance (as is the case in Bali).

Food and supermarket

  • Street food: 1,5–3 € per dish.
  • Restaurant environment: 4-8 € for a full meal.
  • Supermarket (western): 200-300 € per month if you cook at home.
  • Cafes and leisure dining: 100-200 €/month (if you go out a lot).

👉 It is usual to spend in-between 200-400 €/month in food.

Internet and coworking

  • Internet at home: 20-30 €/month (fiber 300-600 MB).
  • Prepaid wireless: 10-20 €/month with unlimited data.
  • Coworkings in Bangkok: 100-150 €/month.
  • Coworkings in Chiang Mai: 50-100 €/month.

Health insurance and health

  • International medical insurance: from 60 €/month up to 200 €/month depending on coverage.
  • Private hospitals in Bangkok: excellent quality, translation staff and all services within the hospital itself.

Transport

  • Grab (Uber asia): pathways for 2-5 €.
  • BTS/MRT in Bangkok: 0,80–1,50 € per journey.
  • Scooter rental monthly: 60-90 €.

Leisure and lifestyle

  • Gym: 40-60 €/month.
  • Film: 6-8 €.
  • Party in Bangkok: 20-60 € per night (depending on area).
  • Internal travel: domestic flights for 30-60 €.
